fantastICOS – Flexible Ai-driven Nilm-based energy managemenT Application through domeSTIC metaOS integration

fantastICOS, a project selected during the ICOS 2nd Open Call, tackles multiple challenges in the domestic energy management sector with a single, scalable solution, setting a new standard for sustainable, secure, and efficient smart residential environments.

The project enables data-driven decisions in smart homes without appliance-level metering infrastructure, addressing the need for real-time, secure residential energy management, supporting the EU push towards edge-cloud continuum solutions, and aligning with EU’s innovation and data security vision.

By facilitating real-time Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM), high-granularity energy demand and Photovoltaic (PV) generation forecasting, fantastICOS delivers real-time decision-making and actuation to improve energy efficiency. The project distinguishes itself from traditional cloud-dependent solutions that suffer from higher costs, security risks, and slow response times by leveraging the edge-cloud continuum to ensure low-latency and privacy-preserving energy analytics while remaining low-cost thanks to its lack of new infrastructure requirements. fantastICOS integrates with the ICOS metaOS, using its components for edge-device AI analytics and efficient node optimization, all through a single energy meter that measures the total energy consumption of the house.

To support the broader adoption of the ICOS platform, fantastICOS is demonstrated in a real-world living lab of 10 households managed by Plegma Labs, validating the practical integration of ICOS metaOS components and showcasing its scalability and real-life applicability.
